Many, Many, Many thanks to all helpers at this years Competition Especially:
Darren and Julie, Jo, Sarah, Andy and Dan who won Gold as well as being a referee!
The Shodan cup is a great opportunity for all SJA members to compete against one of if not the best competitive Judo Club in the region in Trowbridge Judo Club. All our competitions are different and some are for SJA members only but it is important not to become an isolated organization and operate in our own gold fish bowl. Engaging with other clubs delivers the opportunity for our members to test themselves and see exactly how their competitive Judo is progressing and an opportunity to develop further.
We feel that it would be easy to operate competitions for SJA members only but engaging with other clubs is healthy for individual players and the clubs as a whole to progress. Having an annual competition against the leading competitive club in the region gives the opportunity to take stock and those who have done well should take great confidence indeed. Beating or even just being competitive against Trowbridge means you should have no fear of facing practically any player from any other club.
The better the player you compete against then the better player you will become yourself and whilst I recognize that competition is not for everyone, those who do show potential and enjoy competing should always look to do so as frequently as possible which is the reason for setting up the competition squad and gaining BJA affiliation.
Our next competition is in June and is a more relaxed affair that takes place on a Friday Evening among SJA members only with everyone entering winning a medal. SJA members only means that I can pair all competitors up to somebody who will be more or less an equal match as everyone at the competition is somebody that I coach. This is the perfect competition for first time entrants and tiny tots so I look forward to seeing plenty of budding competitors.
Shodan Judo has always and will continue to operate an open door policy making Judo as affordable and access able to all and pride ourselves on coaching students of all ages and abilities including persons with behavioral and learning disorders. However we are also striving to accommodate our members who strive for competitive Judo. If you wish to know more about the opportunities for competitive Judo and wish to join our competition squad then contact Jason or click the link below.

2012 Shodan Cup Medallists
Once again there was a great atmosphere at this years competition with competitors, coaches and spectators conducting themselves in the perfect manner once more. The friendly yet competitive competition served up some exciting Judo from all the weight categories with some plenty of Ippon scores along the way.
With Competition entry needed to qualify for the next set of grading's for all SJA members we expect a bigger turnout from Marlborough, Calne and Chippenham in 2013 which will mean a greater variety of opponents but also a much more competitive battle to be Shodan trophy holders in 2013. The more competitors from each club the greater the chances of winning the trophy.
Thank-you to Trowbridge Judo Club for their continued support in this competition and their part in making it a great competition. Also a big thank-you to everyone who helped organise and run the competition so smoothly.

Well done to Calne Judo Club who had 17 competitors. A squad of 17 is fantastic support for the club and many of Calne's squad were new Judokas with relatively few sessions under their belt. Indeed this was many Calne players first experience of competition. Next year, with the same support and a years worth of Judo under their belts, Calne will be hot contenders to bring back the cup.
The 11 competitors that represented Chippenham were a class act bringing back 9 medals with 2 Silver and 3 Gold. That all important vocal support and encouragement was evident throughout and next year, with a bigger squad we should do the business in 2008.
Special recognition to Katie Ahmed and Cheyenne Sutherland who met in the Woman’s Open final. Both were outstanding and the match went in to first score wins that lasted several minutes, a very long time in Judo. Katie narrowly beat fellow Calne player Cheyenne by just a Koka (3 pts). Well done to both Katie and Cheyenne who I hope are as proud of themselves as I am.

Well done to all entrants to this years Competition. The standard of Judo, effort and determination of all Shodan competitors made me very proud indeed. It was a great day for our club with the competition getting bigger and better each year. Trowbridge won back the Shodan Cup with Calne second, Chippenham third and Marlborough, our newest and smallest club bagged 20 points from just six competitors. This was just two points off fourth place and a fantastic points to competitor ratio.

THE SPECIAL AWARD WINNERS
Best Throw by a Female Competitor was definitely a superb Ippon by Paige Ranger.
Special recognition to Ashlie Chapman who despite being 15 years of age competed in the seniors and managed a Bronze medal. Ashlie also took part in the Junior weight category where is also managed to bag a Bronze Medal. Not only did Ashlie compete and Medal in two categories but he also helped to organise and run the competition.
Most impressive was Ashlie's contest against a Black belt from Blacklands which despite being the lower grade went all the way to a golden score and lasted a total of eight minutes which is an extremely long time in Judo. Ashlie won the match with a Ko Uchi Gake against his black belt opponent. Well Done and thank-you for all your hard work.
Jack Angel – Simply Awesome!!
